On the cliff of Murro di Porco in Sicily, the abandoned lighthouse is deteriorating. The competition brief calls for projects that bridge contemporary architecture, fragile ecosystems and hospitality needs.
The proposal anchors in the majestic, rocky landscape – its topography, sharp boundary to the coastline, and awe-inspiring vistas. The historic lighthouse serves as the reception space, while new, light timber structures house the restaurant, common areas, and back-of-house facilities. The room units are designed on arches that follow the contours of the land, oriented towards both the sea and the mainland. They are prefabricated to minimize disruption and improve the project’s economics.
How to strategically use local and external resources while catering to the senses is the central question the project asks.
